Books We Have Read

Becoming by Michelle Obama

A memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chonicling the experiences that have shaped her - from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world's most famous address.  With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and priviate, telling her full story as she has lived it - in her own words and on her own terms.  Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations - and whose story inspires us to do the same.

With All Due Respect: Defending America with Grit and Grace by Nikki Haley

A revealing, dramatic, deeply personal book about the most significant events of our time, written by the former United States Ambassador to the United Nations.  Nikki Haley is widely admired for her forthright manner,  her sensitive approach to tragic events, and her confident representation of America's interests as our Ambassador to the United Nations during times of crisis and consequence.  In the book, Haley offers a first-hand perspective on major national and international matters, as well as a behind-the-scenes account of her tenure in the Trump administration.  This book reveals a woman who can hold her own - and better - in dometsic and international power politics, a diplomat who is unafraid to take a principled stand even when it is unpopular, and a leader who seeks to bring Americans together in divisive times.

All the King's Men by Robert Penn Warren

Winner of the 1947 Pulitizer Prize, All the King's Men is one of the most famous and widely read works in American literature, and as relevant today as it was fifty years ago.  It traces the rise and fall of demagogue Willie Talos, a fictional Southern politician who resembles the real-life Huey Long of Louisiana.  Talos begins his career as an idealistic man of the people, but he soon becomes corrupted by success and the lust for power.

The Best and The Brightest by David Halberstam
A book that describes how America became involved in Vietnam and what went wrong.  It describes the chain of events that happened and why decisions were made the way they were.
